Classroom Theme Song

I found this YouTube video in the middle of last school year. I wanted to use it as my class theme song, but really didn't have the time to teach it to my students and didn't want to start any new classroom procedures. So I am going to begin this upcoming school year by teaching this song to my students and of course discussing the importance of the message.

I'm not sure how my fifth graders will react to it being from Sesame Street, but I want to us it anyway. I want to focus on the message rather than the messenger. How do you think they will react?

Do you have any songs that you use regularly in your class?

My scholars love this song and they don't care that it is from Sesame Street. In fact I have caught several of them singing it at random times and they are even starting to attach movements to the lyrics. I play the song when the tardy bell rings as a transition to the carpet for our first mini lesson. It's the perfect amount of time for them to put away their morning work, grab their book baskets, and get to the carpet.

On the first day of school, I played the lyrics for my scholars. We sat on the carpet and listened to the song twice without watching the video. After listening to it, I had them list the important messages they could get from the song. This is what they came up with.

  1. Love that song!! I haven't used a song in my class, but I'd like to try it.... I think many kids are naturally musical. Whenever our class phone would ring, they'd all start sing - "The Phone is Ringing!" from WonderPets. (Lots of NickJr watchers I guess!) So glad I found your blog - I look forward so seeing how you do with Daily 5. This will be my first year trying it, so I'll be looking for support. :-)
(One little blogging tip - if you add a "Followers" widget to your blog, it will be a lot easier for your readers to quickly sign up to follow you.)

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

    1. Hi Corrina, thanks for stopping by and thanks for the advice. I just added the followere widget. I am going to need some daily 5 support as well. This will be the first year that anyone at my school is implementing it. And right now I think its just a kindergarten teacher and me hopping on board. I'm not sure how much support she will be. It's nice to know that someone else is trying something new with the same age group.

      Thanks again for the advice.

  2. Hi Katrina! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I love this song!!! I am totally going to use it in my 5th grade classroom - I love and I think the kids would get a kick out of it! I'm your newest follower! :o)

    1. Thanks for being my first follower Ashley!! I'm glad you will be able to use this song in your classroom too.

  3. Update: my students loved the song. Also, I figured out how to add the link.
    Thanks for sharing!

  4. I used this song as my class theme song last year. We played it every morning as the kids came in, and again just before (or following)attendance. My students (2nd and 3rd graders) LOVED it!!
